Rubik's Puzzle Contest This Weekend, Bandung To Host International

The Cuber Club Community of Bandung has announced it is organizing the Bandung Open 2011 International Rubik’s Cube Competition on Feb. 12-13, at the Indonesia Menggugat building in Bandung, West Java.

A spokesman for the competition, Ardiyanto Satriawan, said only 150 participants would join the event.

Participants would race to solve different Rubik's puzzles in 12 categories.

The 12 categories include the 2x2x2 cube, 5x5x5 cube, pyraminx, megaminx, Rubik's Magic, and magic master, three blindfolded contests and a single-handed contest.

Ardiyanto said any records set during the event would be recognized internationally.

“This event is recognized by the World Cube Association,” Ardiyanto said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Wednesday.

The national Rubik's Cube record holder in the master magic category, Marasi Deon, said he plans to break his own record set in the Jakarta Ceria Open in October last year.

The post-graduate student at Bandung Institute of Technology clocked 2.81 seconds to solve the Rubik’s Magic: Master Edition puzzle.

“The world record holder is Chinese, at 1.72 seconds,” Marasi said.

Indonesia is home to world-record holder Muhammad Iril Khairul Anam, 20, who solved a Rubik's cube blindfolded in 59 seconds.

According to Ardiyanto, there are around 500 members of Rubik's cube clubs across Indonesia, including in Medan, Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya.

“Indonesia has third-largest number of Rubik's cube enthusiasts after the US and China,” he said.
