Arresting After-Dinner Sex Game Girls, Berlusconi's

They are not the type of photographs that usually emerge from gatherings hosted by heads of state. But these images reveal what goes on behind closed doors at Silvio Berlusconi’s infamous ‘bunga bunga’ parties. The pictures were discovered on laptops and cameras seized from dozens of female party guests as part of an investigation into claims that the Italian prime minister paid for sex with underage girls.
One picture shows TV showgirl Barbara Guerra, 32, wearing a tight-fitting police uniform and pouting as she dangles a pair of handcuffs. Guerra has appeared on an Italian reality TV show and is the former girlfriend of Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli.
Another picture shows two unidentified women about to kiss, while further images capture other female party guests in provocative poses. All were taken in the early hours of the morning at Berlusconi’s home in Arcore, near Milan.
Officials said Berlusconi had ‘ridiculed’ the police and ‘seriously offended’ nurses after it emerged women wore the uniforms as part of stripper acts at the parties.
The phrase ‘bunga bunga’ is said to refer to an after-dinner sex game. The risque photographs form part of the 20,000 page prosecution case against Berlusconi, who will appear in court next month accused of underage sex and abuse of office.
The 74-year-old is alleged to have given money and jewellery in exchange for sex with 17-year-old belly dancer Karima El Mahroug and 32 other women in the space of two months.
Paying for sex with anyone under 18 is illegal in Italy. Berlusconi is also accused of using his power as prime minister to secure the release of Miss El Mahroug when she was arrested for theft last May.
But he has dismissed the allegations, joking that ‘33 women in two months is too many even for me’.

Sentenced to 7 Years For Rape, Ex-Israeli President Katsav

An Israeli court ordered former Israeli President Moshe Katsav to prison for seven years Tuesday following a rape conviction, rejecting his attorneys' request for leniency and making him the highest-ranking Israeli official ver sentenced to jail.

The silver-haired Katsav remained stoic throughout most of the reading, but he broke down in tears upon hearing his sentence and screamed at the judges: "You made a mistake! It is a lie! The girls know it is a lie!"

As he exited the courtroom, two of his grown sons scuffled with security guards. "I saw you! You hurt my boy!" Katsav screamed. His lawyers vowed to appeal.

In December, the Tel Aviv District Court convicted Katsav, 65, of raping a former employee and sexually harassing two other women who used to work for him. He also was convicted of indecent acts and obstruction of justice. The rape took place before Katsav became president in 2000, while other crimes occurred after he took office.

The three-judge panel, which ruled 2-1, said Katsav's record of public service would not be weighed in his favor, accusing him instead of exploiting his position to become a sexual offender. The court ordered him to report to prison on May 8, giving him time to prepare an appeal. He must also pay fines of about $25,00 and $7,000 to two of his victims.

"The defendant committed the acts like any other person, and he must bear the punishment like any other person," Judge George Kara read from a prepared verdict. "The message leaving this courtroom has to be sharp and clear."

Tuesday's sentencing capped a dramaticfall from grace for a man who rose from humble beginnings to become a symbol of success for Mizrahi Jews, or those of Middle Eastern descent, who for years were an underclass in Israel. The presidency is a largely ceremonial office, typically filled by a respected elder statesman who is capable of rising abovepolitics and unifying the country.

The case has also been seen as a victory for the Israeli legal system and for women's rights in a decades-long struggle to chip away at the nation's macho culture, which once permitted political and military leaders great liberties. Outside the building, a group of women eld signs with a message directed toward female victims of sex crimes, "You're not alone."

The case began nearly five years ago when Katsav suddenly complained that a female employee was trying to extort him. She went to police with her side of the story, and other women came forward with similar complaits of sexual assaults.

Katsav, Israel's eighth president, resigned under public pressure two weeks before his term was to end in 2007. The current president, Nobel winner Shimon Peres, succeeded him.

Katsav repeatedly denied all allegations against him, claiming he was a victim of a political witch hunt and suggesting he was targeted because of his ethnicity. Katsav was born in Iran and immigrated to Israel as a child.

The Israeli public has been riveted by the case's twists and salacious details.

In one memorably bizarre press conference Katsav lashed out angrily at prosecutors and the media for plotting his demise, shaking in anger, waving a computer disk that he said proved his innocence and screaming. Later, he rejected a plea bargain that would have allowed him to avoid jail time.

In December, the Tel Aviv court ruled that Katsav twice raped a woman who worked for him when he served as tourism minister in the 1990s, and assaulted and harassed two other women who worked for him when he was president, from 2000 to 2007. The scathing ruling called him "manipulative" and said his testimony was riddled with lies.

The conviction brought nearly unanimous scorn for Katsav and widespread praise for a legal system that proved itself egalitarian by bringing him to justice. Katsav's supporters, mostly people from his hometown of Kiryat Malachi, have demanded an explanation about why the court chose his victims' versions of events over the former president's.

At Tuesday's sentencing, Kara said Katsav's acts harmed the public's trust in its officials and carried moral turpitude. He acknowledged that the spectacle of a former president going off to jail would be difficult, but necessary to prove that no individual is above the law.

"We can't forget that the accused is not a victim but a victimizer," he said.

Katsav's attorneys have argued that their client did not receive a fair trial because of a hostile climate created by the media. In a minority opinion, Yehudit Shevach said these circumstances and the pain caused to the Katsav family influenced her to recommend a lesser sentence of four years behind bars.

Throughout the reading, the calls of protesters outside the courtroom were heard clearly inside.

A stone-faced Katsav entered the courtroom accompanied by his sons and confidantes and would not address the media. Neither his wife Gila nor his three accusers were present.

He refused to sit in the dock until the cameras left and then erupted in anger upon hearing his sentence.

"Just because someone is quiet doesn't mean he is guilty," he cried. "It's all lies. You have committed a great injustice."

Katsav's attorney, Zion Amir, said the court trampled his client's rights.

"There are those who think the sentencing is a celebration of democracy in Israel. I think it is a sad day, a day of mourning," he said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Tzipi Livni each issued statements expressing sorrow for Katsav's fate but respect for the sentencing.

To Be Named The World, The Wolf Child Deligthed

Her nicknames may include ‘wolf girl’ and ‘monkey face’.
But 11-year-old Thai girl Supatra Sasuphan today insisted that she was after being officially recognised as the world’s hairiest girl.
Although the schoolgirl from Bangkok has faced merciless teasing at school, Supatra says being given a Guinness World Record for her hair has helped her become extremely popular.
I’m very happy to be in the Guinness World Records! A lot of people have to do a lot to get in,’ she said. ‘All I did was answer a few questions and then they gave it to me.’

Supatra is one of just 50 known sufferers of Ambras Syndrome – caused by a faulty chromosome – to be documented since the Middle Ages. Before the disease was understood, sufferers were branded ‘werewolves.’
She has thick hair growing over her face, ears, arms, legs and back. Even laser treatment has failed to stop the hair growth.
But while most sufferers have been shunned, Supatra has gradually been embraced by her community, and became a popular and outgoing child.

She said: ‘There were a few people who used to tease me and call me monkey face but they don’t do it any more.

‘I’m very used to this condition. I can’t feel the hair as it has always been like this. I don’t feel anything.

‘It does sometimes make it difficult to see when it gets long.I hope I will be cured one day.’

In other ways Supatra is the same as other children her age – she loves swimming, dancing to her favourite music and playing with friends.

But more than anything, Supatra loves perching in front of the TV at her tiny one-bedroom family home in Pranakom, on the outskirts of Bangkok, to watch cartoons.
Supatra has another operation when she was two-years-old and can now breathe normally.

But when Sammrueng and his wife Somphon, 38, brought Supatra home to live with them and their other daughter Sukanya, now 15, they faced more problems.

‘When neighbours first saw Nat they asked what kind of sin I had done. I was very worried about what she would be when she grew up because of other children teasing her,’ he said.

But Supatra’s sweet nature quickly won over people in her community.

Sammrueng, a jewellery maker, said: ‘She gets along with others really well and is very generous. She has a lot of friends.

‘She is just the same as any other little girl her age.

‘But her teeth grow slowly and she can’t see very well.”

Doctors tried to remove the hair with laser treatment when she was two-years-old but despite numerous sessions it kept growing back as thickly as before.

Supatra’s hair has got increasingly thicker as she has grown up so her mother has to cut it back regularly for her.

She uses baby shampoo to wash her hair as she is allergic to stronger brands.

Sammrueng said: ‘I still hope one day she will be cured. We will do anything we can if it will help her.’

Gadhafi Supports Peace Proposal, Venezuela

Moammar Gadhafi supports a plan proposed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to help mediate a peceful resolution to the crisis in Libya, a Venezuelan official said Thursday.

Information Minister Andres Izarra said on Twitter that Venezuela’s foreign minister, Nicolas Maduro, spoke with his Libyan counterpart, who in Gadhafi’s name confirmed his government’s support for the peace initiative proposed by Chavez.

“Libya’s official acceptance of Chavez’s peace proposal is news that we believe raises hopes for the possibility of a negotiated and peaceful way out of the conflict,” Izarra told The Associated Press in a response to e-mailed questions.

However, other countries ranging from the United States to Italy dismissed Chavez’s proposal as the wrong approach. And Gadhafi’s opponents have shown no openness to talks as long as he remains in power.

“You don’t need an international commission to tell Colonel Gadhafi what he needs to do for the good of his country and the good of his people,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters in Washington. “He should step aside, and for the good of his people, he should stop attacking them.”

Chavez has called Gadhafi a friend, and the two share some socialist political ideas as well as their opposition to Washington. Chavez has said he will not cave to international pressure to condemn Gadhafi for his government’s crackdown on protesters.

Izarra has said Chavez spoke with Gadhafi earlier this week about creating a bloc of friendly countries to help mediate. Izarra said on Twitter that several Latin American and Caribbean foreign ministers will discuss Chavez’s peace proposal at a March 11 meeting of the Bolivarian Alternative bloc, or ALBA.

“Let’s talk about peace for Libya. Negotiated ways out,” Izarra wrote. And in an apparent reference to any possible U.S. military involvement, he said: “Let’s keep the invading eagles away.”

Crowley said any effort to resolve the Libya crisis peacefully deserves consideration. But if Gadhafi isn’t “responding to the many calls across the international community to step down, it is uncertain to me what an international commission is going to accomplish,” he said.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said that the proposal as he understands it would leave Gadhafi in place, and as a result is unacceptable.

The head of the Cairo-based Arab League – also contacted about Chavez’s proposal – seemed cool to the idea. League spokesman Hisham Youssef said the idea was still not clearly drawn out and added that any mediation must “take into consideration the aspirations of the Libyan people” – an apparent reference to those who have joined the uprising against Gadhafi.

Outside the Libyan Embassy in Caracas, meanwhile, a group of protesters condemned the Libyan government’s attacks on civilian protesters and shouted anti-Gadhafi chants such as: “Get out dictator, murderer of your people!”

Diego Arria, a prominent Chavez opponent and former Venezuelan U.N. ambassador, led the group of about 30 protesters and called Chavez’s mediation proposal “totally absurd.”

Chavez has accused the United States of exaggerating events in Libya to “justify an invasion,” and has said he sees parallels between the situation faced by Gadhafi and a 2002 coup that he survived in Venezuela. In a televised speech Thursday night, Chavez said: “Let’s hope they don’t invade Libya.”

In Ecuador, President Rafael Correa echoed Chavez’s stance, saying he would never support any military intervention in Libya.

Speaking to the television station Telemar, Correa also expressed misgivings about the decision to suspend Libya from the U.N. Human Rights Council. He said he was troubled by the “international double standard, because every sanction against Israel is blocked by the United States” when the Israeli government is accused of violating human rights.

Chavez has built a close relationship with Gadhafi during his 12 years in office. In 2009, Chavez attended anniversary celebrations in Libya marking Gadhafi’s 40 years in power, and later that year Gadhafi pitched his Bedouin tent on Venezuela’s Margarita Island during his first visit to Latin America.

Chavez has suggested a “goodwill commission” should be sent to Libya to try to ease the conflict. But how such a delegation might function in the absence of dialogue between Gadhafi and his opponents is unclear. An opposition spokesman in Libya, Mustafa Gheriani, ruled out any negotiations with Gadhafi, saying “his hands are tainted with blood.”

Associated Press writers Bradley Klapper in Washington, Nicole Winfield in Rome, Fabiola Sanchez and Christopher Toothaker in Caracas, and Gonzalo Solano in Quito, Ecuador, contributed to this report.

American Idol 13 Finalists

American Idol” picked its 13 finalists on Thursday, ending a week that saw the field of 24 semifinalists cut nearly in half.

Ten of the spots in the final baker’s dozen went to the top five vote-getters of each gender. The remaining three were wild-card selections from the judges, who made some unconventional selections.

It would have been very easy to choose Kendra Chantelle and Robbie Rosen, both of whom were among the six selected to sing for their lives one final time (as host Ryan Seacrest so ably exaggerated). Both look the part of an “Idol” contender, and presumably could be shaped to sound that way as well once music exec and “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine and his team of polishers gets to work with them.

Instead, the judges used one wild-card spot for Naima Adedapo, the 26-year-old with the huge voice. She’s older and has a jazzier sound than the typical woman who advances, and could easily go out next week. But if Crystal Bowersox can make the finale a year ago, there’s no reason Adedapo couldn’t make a run as well.

Munir's Case AGO Still Studying

The Attorney General’s Office is still studying the decision of the Supreme Court to reject the appeal made by activists demanding that the court review an acquittal of murder charges on a top intelligence officer.

“We are analysing the decision. I am not yet in charge of making the decision,” Attorney General Basrief Arief said Friday.

Former top National Intelligence Agency (BIN) officer Muchdi Purwopranjono, was acquitted of all charges by the South Jakarta District Court in December 2008 regarding the murder of human rights activists Munir Said Thalib.
Munir was poisoned with arsenic on a Garuda Indonesia flight.

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal against the acquittal by activists in 2009.

Representatives from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) made a visit that day to the AGO to urge a review of Munir’s case, Basrief said.
Usman Hamid from Kontras said that the request had been received well by the AGO.

Antiquities On Sale

Despite claims by antique dealers that their goods are ratusan (hundreds) years old, Indonesia’s 2010 law states no item more than 50 years old can leave the nation’s borders.

According to I Gusti Bagus Armanusa of the office for archeological heritage conservation across Bali and East and West Nusa Tenggara (NTT and NTB), the updated law came into effect last year, however copies of the new law were not available at his office.

“Any object 50 years old or older cannot be taken out of Indonesia without a permit from the minister of culture and tourism,” said Armanusa.

He stressed that to protect Indonesia’s antiquities was a job that demanded close relations between many government departments, particularly those within the customs office.

“We have a very close working relationship with customs here in Bali. If they are suspicious of an item they call and we go and check the object. Customs uncover around one or two objects in visitors’ luggage each year,” said Armanusa adding the new law on antiquities calls for a fine and jail time for offenders.

The loss of the nation’s cultural heritage through theft, such as a recent case in Bali where sacred Hindu relics were stolen and sold to an Italian national, now in prison, creates holes in the nation’s history. When an artifact disappears there is a potential gap in understanding history’s progress.

“When cultural artifacts are lost to Indonesia we are firstly angry, then we look at what has been cut out of our historical record. Into the future our young people need to know where we have come from,” says Armanusa of Indonesia’s more than 2,000-year long civilization.

Officers from his department make annual calls on all antique dealers to check their stock is licensed to sell, however Armanusa admits dating items is not always easy.

“We can date ceramics and objects from Java, Bali the NTT and NTB, but if a wooden object is from say Kalimantan or Sumatra, we don’t have the equipment to dates these items and we are not fully familiar with the styles of those regions,” says Armanusa of the difficulty his office faces in protecting the national heritage from criminals.

Three New City Cars, Suzuki To Introduce

PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) will introduce three city cars to Indonesia during the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in July this year.

The company registered the three cars, Alto K 10, Wagon R and A-Star, at the Ministry of Industry on Thursday, kompas.com reported.

All of them have 998cc, 3-cylinder engines with 66-68 HP and 90Nm torque at 3,000 rpm even though they have different specifications. For example, the Wagon R has an automatic transmission.

All of the models would be imported from India, already fully manufactured, but there has yet to be any information on whether all of them would be marketed in Indonesia .

Rainbows Love in The Time

In his timeless novel Love in the Time of Cholera Gabriel García Márquez crushes the notion that falling in love is only for the young.

Valentine’s Day next Monday, the young men of Bali’s GAYa Dewata foundation will speak more widely of love in the time of “rainbows” that exists among humans worldwide during a public forum at the Bali Museum in Denpasar.

This year’s day of love marks the 19th anniversary of the organization, first established in 1992 to raise awareness among the homosexual community of AIDS and HIV, a disease the group still works to prevent within the gay community. Through their public outreach day on Feb. 14 the group is also sending a message of solidarity with their brothers and sisters living in parts of Indonesia where discrimination against same sex love is rife.

“We will hold this anniversary celebration on Valentine’s Day because a lot of [gay people] in other cities are still being discriminated against. Here in Bali we are accepted by the community. Out of this Bali discussion forum we want to highlight that some people still have negative feelings towards gay people, so we want to show them that we can be united in a positive direction,” explains head of Bali GAYa Dewata, Christian Supriyadinata.

He is open and eloquent when discussing the fact of being born gay, lesbian or most difficulty, warisah or transsexual.

We are trying to inform people that we are not different, just our sexual orientation is different,” says Christian who raises ideas of the sameness of humans written about by Shakespeare in Shylock’s cry “if you prick us do we not bleed?”

“Everyone from birth hopes to be the same as those around them — we did not want to be born gay or transsexual. Also our parents did not hope for children born gay, but if we are born gay it is God’s blessing. People only live the life God gave us. This is the living color of life,” says Christian of the diversity of possibilities within the DNA strands and the hormones these produce across all life forms.
He points to the gradations of possibility that occur in a day.

“We have day and night, but we also have the light of mornings and evenings. We have black and white, but we also have all the colors of the rainbow, in humans we have children born male or female and the variables within that so we have gays and lesbians, transsexuals and heterosexuals, so between those two male and female absolutes there is a lot of variation — there is a rainbow [of consenting adult sexuality] and we need to respect this. We are people and we only wish to live and value what God gave us,” says Christian who knew since he was 12 years of age that he was different to other boys.

“I didn’t like girls — I liked boys. Romantically I felt love and attention for boys; I felt all those things kids in love feel, embarrassed and shy, the feelings young boys and girls feel, so it’s the same for boys who fall in love with boys,” says Christian.

He adds while he has never spoken openly with his parents about his sexual orientation, it was understood from very early on.

“My parents never asked, but they knew I was like this — gay. They also knew I would never marry and they never pushed me. If I had forced myself to marry, life would have been torture for me and my wife, I would have had to live someone else’s life,” says Christian.

As a straight looking guy, Christian has never faced discrimination. For attractive young women like Corazon and Sofia, born with male genitalia, but women in all other aspects of existence, they have faced some discrimination for their genetic choices in love.

“My parents accept me as a transsexual,” says 31-year-old Corazon.

“Out of six kids, my parents have three that are different. One brother is also transsexual and a sister is a lesbian. I have faced discrimination, even here in Bali, but that is if I go out in hot pants or short skirts. Then I get wolf whistles and other negative comments. If I wear a long dress there is no problem,” says Corazon highlighting the fact that in Bali it is not sexual orientation in love matches that the public reacts to, but rather culturally inappropriate attire.
Her hopes for Valentine’s Day are generous, “this is a day to give love to all. Love everyone, don’t look at gender, female, male, transsexual, gay or lesbian — it’s not about your sexual orientation status but about love,” says Corazon.

Twenty-six-year-old Sofia, is an elegant, friendly person who has been dressing as a woman since she was 16. Her family accepts her as a woman as does the rest of society. When asked why she had not opted for a gender re-alignment to bring her genitalia into line with her real self, she was wise beyond her years.

“I see that if I had the operation and then got married, I may end up divorced because I could not have children. Or I could be beaten by my husband, so I am safer to be a male in female clothing,” says Sofia who with the rest of the gang at the GAYa Dewata foundation knew from childhood their Valentine Days would be different.

“At school, playing sports like soccer, we would join in, but we ran like girls,” laugh Sofia, Corazon and Christian.

In Jakarta, Fourth Wave Of Egypt Evacuees Arrives

A fourth wave of Indonesian evacuees from Egypt arrived at Pondok Gede Hajj dormitory in East Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

401 evacuees arrived at around 7 a.m having landed in Jakarta. They were evacuated from Egypt due to the ongoing political turmoil there.

“We have prepared rooms for around 500 people,” the dormitory's head, Idham Chalid, said as quoted by TribunNews.com.

Six refugees from the previous round of flights from Egypt were still staying at the dormitory. Four of them were waiting for their parents to pick them up and the two are were a couple. The wife was recovering at a nearby hospital for injuries sustained in the violence in Egypt. Her husband was staying at the dormitory while she recovered.

Idham said the dormitory had been doing a good job at accommodating the evacuees.

PR That Doesn't Bark, Or Barks Too Much, Personal Technology

There’s a moment in All The President’s Men that nails it.

Bob Woodward is telling his editors about when he’d called up the White House to confirm that Howard Hunt, one of the Watergate burglars, worked there as a consultant for Charles Colson, one of the most powerful men in President Nixon’s government. He recounts how the PR guy stressed that Colson, nor anyone else at the White House, knew about Watergate.

Isn’t that what you’d expect him to say, one of the editors says. Absolutely, Woodward replies. So?
“I never asked them about Watergate,” he says.

This, to me, is not only great cinema but classic journalism. It’s also a classic PR error, and you can see it all the time. To say or do something that reveals what your client really cares about — and how much they care about it.

Recently I saw it in a feeble response from a major software company to a very specific question I’d asked. Tagged on were answers to a bunch of imaginary questions I hadn’t asked, or even implied I was interested in. Lord knows how long they took to put this together. Actually I know — 10 days, because that’s how long I had to wait.

As a journalist, your instinct is to remove clumps of hair from your own head, or, if already clump-free, those of family members or passers-by.

But actually, buried in the robot speak are nuggets. Now I know what they thought I was asking, or might ask, because they’ve invested so much time in trying to build a smokescreen.

And the fact they didn’t address the one question I did ask recalls Sherlock Holmes and the dog that didn’t bark.

In this case, of course, the dog kept quiet because it recognized its owner, who turned out to be the guilty party. Whereas the Woodward Maneouver is about what PR folk put in that wasn’t asked for, the Bark-free Dog is about what they leave out.

This sort of blunder — leave stuff out, put other stuff in — is all over the place when you know what to look for. I see it in breathless press releases that I never asked for.

Interviews when the media-trained exec grinds each answer back to the message bullet-points he’s got tattooed into his brain. I see it in unsolicited pitches that offer interviews with CEOs who really should be busier.

I see it in PR companies which are a little too eager to lend us technology columnists a gadget. And then ignoring requests to take them back when I’m done.

Good PR should be seen and not heard, and preferably not seen. If you blow smoke you’re going to leave a vapor trail, when you should be invisible. Your client’s face should be no higher above the parapet than that required to create interest, if that’s what’s being sought. And if it’s not being sought, you should just answer the question and then, frankly, hush up.

We’re not all Woodwards or hear dogs that don’t bark, but we can all smell smoke.

A Youthful Celebration Of Classical Music, Cantabile

Cantabile! A youthful celebration of classical music

AdigunaAddie Muljadi Sumaatmadja, also known as Addie MS, is a member of Indonesia’s celebrity club.

He has more than 44,000 followers on Twitter. Yet he is not a soap opera star or a business tycoon, but a respected conductor, composer, music arranger, and director of the Twilight Orchestra.

In fact, only a handful of classical music performers in Indonesia are as popular as Addie MS. He and his Twilite Orchestra understand that classical music does not traditionally belong to Indonesia’s culture. Therefore, he often chooses simple and easily understood themes for Twilite Orchestra concerts, making them accessible and even enjoyable to teenagers.

For Twilite Orchestra’s first concert in 2011, Addie MS used Twitter to ask his followers what they wanted to hear. The answer was: Nodame Cantabile. If you’re not familiar with Nodame Cantabile, you’re probably above the age bracket targeted for this concert. Nodame Cantabile started as a popular Japanese cartoon (manga) in 2001, which was then used to produce a live action drama aired in 2006 and a popular Japanese cartoon series (anime) in 2008.

The story recounts the romance between Megumi “Nodame” Noda and Shinichi Chiaki, two eccentric teenage music students. The ups and downs of their relationship is expressed in the works of Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Gershwin, which they encounter and perform along the way.

So Twilite Orchestra’s “Cantabile!” concert performed last Thursday at the Balai Sarbini Hall, Jakarta, was like a dream come true for hundreds of teenage Jakartans.

The concert started with Montagues and Capulets, from Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2, Op. 64 by Sergei Prokofiev. Many would have recognized the tune as it is often used when introducing mafia godfathers. Although the tempo faltered a bit at the start, many in the audience nodded at the tune.

Two solo pianists were invited to perform at the concert, based on requests sent on Twitter. Twenty-five-year-old Gita Bayuratri played the popular Etude Op. 10 No. 4 in C-sharp minor by Frédéric Chopin while 14-year-old Victoria Audrey Sarasvathi performed Danse Russe by Igor Stravinsky.

Audrey, who performed in a dashing purple dress, had to stretch her legs to reach the piano’s pedals.

But when she played Danse Russe, her expression, accuracy, and skill caught the attention of the audience.

The jewel of this concert, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, premiered in 1924 at the Aeolian Hall, New York, the US, pioneering the inclusion of jazz elements into a classical music composition. It starts with the famous clarinet glissando, a clarinet thrill followed by a 17-note rising diatonic scale.

Kazuha Nakahara, head of the piano program at Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory, played the piano part of this composition. Her vibrant piano playing, coupled with Addie’s smooth style at the baton, presented the audience with a rare opportunity to share Gershwin’s quest for creative musical exploration. Critics are still debating whether the composition can be considered as “jazz”. But the final judgment came from the audience, as the breath-taking performance was given a long applause.

After the intermission, two compositions were performed: Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 “Italian”: 1st Movement and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op 18. Levi Gunardi, one if Indonesia’s noted pianist, played the challenging piano for Piano Concerto No. 2.

During his visit to Europe in 1928, George Gershwin visited Alban Berg, a genius Austrian composer. To honor his guest, Berg organized private performances of his work, including Lyric Suite, a composition so sophisticated it is said to have a “narcosis” effect. Berg asked Gershwin to play one of his compositions on piano but Gershwin, who felt dwarfed by Berg’s reputation, shied away. Berg then gave Gershwin a stern look, saying: “Mr. Gershwin, music is music!”

Music is indeed music: Whether it is composed by a genius composer or by a long-haired rock singer, music is for everyone. Although a light theme was chosen for ‘Cantabile!’, the music was dead serious. For those critics arguing the musical performance paled in comparison to concerts in Vienna or Berlin, they should take note of the hundreds of youngsters in jeans and T-shirts who came to the Balai Sarbini Hall that night — crowds one would never see in Europe.

And this shows just how Indonesia is today: Full of young spirits, eager to live and learn.

That the Twilite Orchestra managed to attract so many young audiences to see, not Baby Baby from Justin Bieber, but Piano Concerto No. 2 from Rachmaninoff, is already an achievement. We hope to see more of these concerts in the future.

Awards Bollywood Stars in Singapore, Zee Cine

As the rains welcomed the arrival of Bollywood stars in Singapore, Indians from all over the world flocked to the Lion City to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities. People from as far as Dubai, Sydney, the Philippines and Africa came just to witness the awards night at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.

Although not as prestigious as the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards, Zee Cine has proven it is worthy of attention, featuring a number of famous artists.

Akshay Kumar — known for his successful hit comedies with Katrina Kaif — hosted the show with Sajid Khan and the two entertained the audience with jokes.

Although Salman Khan didn’t make it to the event, his blockbuster movie Dabangg garnered most of the awards including Best Film, Best Debut Director for Abhinav Kashyap, Best Debut for actress Sonakshi Sinha, Best Music for director-duo Sajid-Wajid, Song of the Year for Munni Badnaam Hui and other technical awards including Best Editing, Best Action and Best Background Score. Khan played the role of a police officer who pocketed stolen money.

Emotions ran high throughout the night, with Hrithik Roshan beaming when he was awarded Best Actor for the movie Guzaarish, a critically acclaimed movie about euthanasia.

“This movie is very special to me because of its message. It is the suffering, weaknesses, and misery in our lives that become the wind beneath our wings,” said Hrithik.

Aishwarya Rai Bachan, who won the Best Jury Actress for the movie Guzaarish mesmerized the audience with her dazzling dance performance in a space-cum-futuristic outfit.

Best Actress winner Vidya Balan, referring to her role in the movie Ishqiya, jokingly said while accepting the award: “If I’d known that swearing, shooting a gun, and having an affair with two men would get me an award, I would have done it five years ago.”

Karan Johar grabbed the award for Best Director for the movie My Name is Khan. “Although I have been attending awards shows every year, the last award I won was 10 years ago for the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” he said.

The lifetime achievement award went to Shatrughan Sinha, who started his acting career in 1969 in the movie Sajan in a minor role as a police constable.

Between 7,000 to 10,000 people attended the awards show, which was not surprising considering the reach of Zee’s cable TV network. More than 100 Indians from Indonesia attended the show.

The influx of Bollywood movies in theaters and the availability of the channel brought Bollywood closer to Indonesia.

Zee has its own cable TV network which consists of 10 channels. The Zee Sea and the Zee Cinema are the two most popular, featuring Indian soap operas and movies, viewed by Indians all over the world.

With people excitedly queued at the gates, the doors opened 30 minutes late as last-minute rehearsals were still taking place, much to the dismay of the viewers. It was Shahrukh Khan’s dance performance with an elegantly dressed ensemble that stole the show.

Shahrukh was awarded Best Actor for his stunning acting in the movie My Name is Khan.

His second dance number, which appeared almost at the end of the show, was a treat for the die-hard fans who stayed for it.

A spokesman for the competition, Ardiyanto Satriawan, said only 150 participants would join the event.

Participants would race to solve different Rubik's puzzles in 12 categories.

The 12 categories include the 2x2x2 cube, 5x5x5 cube, pyraminx, megaminx, Rubik's Magic, and magic master, three blindfolded contests and a single-handed contest.

Ardiyanto said any records set during the event would be recognized internationally.

“This event is recognized by the World Cube Association,” Ardiyanto said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Wednesday.

The national Rubik's Cube record holder in the master magic category, Marasi Deon, said he plans to break his own record set in the Jakarta Ceria Open in October last year.

The post-graduate student at Bandung Institute of Technology clocked 2.81 seconds to solve the Rubik’s Magic: Master Edition puzzle.

“The world record holder is Chinese, at 1.72 seconds,” Marasi said.

Indonesia is home to world-record holder Muhammad Iril Khairul Anam, 20, who solved a Rubik's cube blindfolded in 59 seconds.

According to Ardiyanto, there are around 500 members of Rubik's cube clubs across Indonesia, including in Medan, Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya.

“Indonesia has third-largest number of Rubik's cube enthusiasts after the US and China,” he said.
