Awards Bollywood Stars in Singapore, Zee Cine

As the rains welcomed the arrival of Bollywood stars in Singapore, Indians from all over the world flocked to the Lion City to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities. People from as far as Dubai, Sydney, the Philippines and Africa came just to witness the awards night at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.

Although not as prestigious as the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards, Zee Cine has proven it is worthy of attention, featuring a number of famous artists.

Akshay Kumar — known for his successful hit comedies with Katrina Kaif — hosted the show with Sajid Khan and the two entertained the audience with jokes.

Although Salman Khan didn’t make it to the event, his blockbuster movie Dabangg garnered most of the awards including Best Film, Best Debut Director for Abhinav Kashyap, Best Debut for actress Sonakshi Sinha, Best Music for director-duo Sajid-Wajid, Song of the Year for Munni Badnaam Hui and other technical awards including Best Editing, Best Action and Best Background Score. Khan played the role of a police officer who pocketed stolen money.

Emotions ran high throughout the night, with Hrithik Roshan beaming when he was awarded Best Actor for the movie Guzaarish, a critically acclaimed movie about euthanasia.

“This movie is very special to me because of its message. It is the suffering, weaknesses, and misery in our lives that become the wind beneath our wings,” said Hrithik.

Aishwarya Rai Bachan, who won the Best Jury Actress for the movie Guzaarish mesmerized the audience with her dazzling dance performance in a space-cum-futuristic outfit.

Best Actress winner Vidya Balan, referring to her role in the movie Ishqiya, jokingly said while accepting the award: “If I’d known that swearing, shooting a gun, and having an affair with two men would get me an award, I would have done it five years ago.”

Karan Johar grabbed the award for Best Director for the movie My Name is Khan. “Although I have been attending awards shows every year, the last award I won was 10 years ago for the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” he said.

The lifetime achievement award went to Shatrughan Sinha, who started his acting career in 1969 in the movie Sajan in a minor role as a police constable.

Between 7,000 to 10,000 people attended the awards show, which was not surprising considering the reach of Zee’s cable TV network. More than 100 Indians from Indonesia attended the show.

The influx of Bollywood movies in theaters and the availability of the channel brought Bollywood closer to Indonesia.

Zee has its own cable TV network which consists of 10 channels. The Zee Sea and the Zee Cinema are the two most popular, featuring Indian soap operas and movies, viewed by Indians all over the world.

With people excitedly queued at the gates, the doors opened 30 minutes late as last-minute rehearsals were still taking place, much to the dismay of the viewers. It was Shahrukh Khan’s dance performance with an elegantly dressed ensemble that stole the show.

Shahrukh was awarded Best Actor for his stunning acting in the movie My Name is Khan.

His second dance number, which appeared almost at the end of the show, was a treat for the die-hard fans who stayed for it.
